There are two interesting structures at Howick, one is a reconstruction of a Mesolithic dwelling that was built on the post holes of an archaeological dig a couple of years ago and featured on the Open University “Coast” series.

It sits overlooking the sea whilst the original would have been a couple of miles inland.

It is a small hint of the long and rich history of this area that people often only glimpse through the much later castles on the coast.

The other building that has long fascinated me is the Victorian Bathing house built at the other end of the bay.

I did a quick recce of the bathing house to check the light and access but decided after a couple of frames that it was definitely a better shot for dawn the next morning.

A short distance up the rocky coast, Dunstanburgh Castle with it’s high tower stood much more chance of catching the last golden light of the day.

Sure enough, Sunrise next morning gave me just the light I wanted back at Howick lifting the bathing house and the dark rocks out of the shadows against the lively rising tide.

A nice start to a promising trip.
