Cathedral Quarry. Cumbria
30th March 2007
This is part of the slate mining complex near Hodge Close and is very popular with climbers.
Fortunately on this occasion I did not have to compete with them for my viewpoint.
The range of contrast here is a good demonstration of the advantages of a digital workflow.
I have tried to photograph this quarry before on film and not had much success.
Here I’ve been able to blend exposures for the brightest and darkest areas to retain detail in both.
With exposures ranging from fractions of a second to minutes in other places this shot would have been impossible in a single frame of film and very difficult to achieve in the darkroom with multiple frames.
